Windows Embedded is a family of lightweight operating systems from Microsoft, designed for use in embedded computer systems. These systems range from ATMs to mobile phones.
There are a number of categories of Windows Embedded OS:
- Windows NT 4.0 Embedded
- Windows CE (Embedded Compact) - for very small computers such as games consoles and set-top boxes
- Windows Mobile is a specialised version of Windows CE
- Windows Embedded Standard 2009 (previously Windows XP Embedded) - a special component version of Windows XP. WES 2011 will be based on Windows 7.
- Windows Embedded Enterprise - full editions of XP or Vista, but licenced specifically for embedded devices
- Windows Embedded POSReady - a version of Windows XP Embedded tailored for POS (Point of Sale / Point of Service) systems
- Windows Embedded NAVReady
- Windows Embedded Server
