Universal Serial Bus, commonly abbreviated as USB, is a series of industry standards that defines cables, connectors and communications protocols for connection, communication, and power supply between computers and devices. Initially developed by Intel in the mid-1990s, it is currently developed by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF).

Description[]

USB was designed to standardize the connection of computer peripherals (including keyboards, pointing devices, digital cameras, printers, portable media players, disk drives and network adapters) to personal computers, both to communicate and to supply electric power. It has largely replaced a variety of earlier interfaces, such as serial ports and parallel ports, as well as separate power chargers for portable devices - and has become commonplace on a wide range of devices.

Support in Windows[]

The first version of Microsoft Windows to support USB was Windows 95, though early builds required the installation of driver software.[1] Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) included support for USB 1.1. Windows 2000 received support for USB 2.0 in Service Pack 4.[2] Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 were the first to include built-in support for USB 3.0.[3]
