Reversi, also known as Othello, is a video game that was commercially introduced with Windows 1.0 in 1985. This version featured an AI opponent and was included through Windows 3.0. An Internet version was included with Windows Me and XP.

The object of the game is to have the majority of disks turned to display your color when the last playable empty square is filled.

On Microsoft Windows, the game board is composed of an 8x8 grid. Two black discs and two white discs are placed in a starting position at the center of the board, diagonally to one other. Black takes the first turn.

When taking a turn, the player needs to place a new disc adjacent to the opponent's disc(s), where there is the player's disc on the other side of the opponent's discs. When the disc is placed, the opponent's disc(s) in between are switched to the player's color. This is followed by the opponent's turn. This game requires much strategy and is ended when all playable squares are used or neither player is able to place a disc.

Windows versions[]

The original version of Reversi was first included with Windows 1.0 and was known for its challenging AI. The Windows 3.0 version added help support. A version for Windows 3.1 with updated graphics and animation had been developed,[1] but was not included as it was replaced with Solitaire. However, some users managed to get Reversi to run on Windows 95 and 98 as hidden files remained to support the game. This was removed entirely from later NT-based versions of Windows, such as Windows 2000.

An Internet version of Reversi was provided with Windows Me and XP, but was no longer included with Windows Vista. The servers supporting Windows Me and XP users were no longer operational as of July 31, 2019. Servers for Windows 7 users were available through January 22, 2020.[2][3] Third-party versions are available online from the Microsoft Store.
