Jim Kajiya (holder of a Ph.D in Computer Sciene from the University of Utah, circa 1979) was hired as a senior researcher for Microsoft Corporation in 1994, a position he held until 1997, where led and developed the graphics group.

He currently is a Distinguished Engineer and serves as a Microsoft director of research.
