Bill Hilf joined Microsoft in 2004 and became their General Manager Of Platform Strategy at Microsoft, and director of Microsoft's work with open-source projects. He was previously employed with IBM, where he helped develop their work with Linux based projects.

At Microsoft, he has continued to promote unity between Linux and Microsoft, as well as Unix support in Windows Powershell and Windows Server.

He also founded a sports-based non-profit organization called High Five Hope, a charity for children which has been recognized and endorsed by Microsoft.
